It’s no secret I’m a little obsessed with avocados. I never really cared for them as a kid, but now that I’m wiser, I can’t get enough of them! Sandwiches, guacamole, tossed in salads, you name it, I’m game for it. So when my cousin made me Avocado Toast at our cabin this summer, I was hooked. And needless to say, we’ve had a lot of avocado toast for breakfast since then.

I’d heard of avocado toast before, but for some (crazy) reason I had never gotten around to making it. I mean, it seems pretty obvious- I love it with tortilla chips so why not just use a piece of toast to get that deliciousness to my mouth?!
Take your Avocado Toast to the Next Level
To make the most basic avocado toast all you need is an avocado and a piece of toast. But if you’re ready to take it to the next level, let me help you. With just a little effort and things you may have in your kitchen already, you can throw together a great little breakfast or snack.
Make sure you have a ripe avocado. There’s nothing worse than getting ready for an avocado treat, only to cut into it and it’s still rock hard or brown and rotting inside. It’s always kind of a gamble for me, but if you can find an avocado that is a little squishy, but not too much, you’re on the right track. If it’s still a little hard, I leave it on the counter for a day or two to ripen.
Any bread will do, but for a real treat, a nice tasty piece of fresh baked white bread, lightly toasted, makes for a great base piece. If you want to go a little healthier, stick with a good quality whole wheat bread such as Dave’s Killer Bread. I personally like how the bread’s seeds and spices adds to the flavor.
My cousin introduced me to an amazing seasoning from Trader Joe’s that is perfect for avocado toast- Everything But the Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend. This seasoning has sea salt, garlic and onion for a perfect blend of tastiness. It’s great for avocado toast. However, one day I was out of the seasoning blend (gasp!) so I looked to my spice cupboard and found another great option, Tajin Clasico Seasoning. I first had Tajin served with tropical fruits in Mexico many years ago and fell in love with it! We even used to bring some back with us because I liked it so much. But then I started seeing it in our local grocery store and recently Costco started selling a 6 pack option (I like it, but that seemed a little overboard for home use). So, I sprinkled some Tajin on my avocado toast and was quite happy with the outcome.
Fresh Squeezed Juice
A little wedge of lime juice really makes your avocado toast pop! It is definitely a great addition to your toast if you have some. Another option is lemon juice, but it doesn’t have quite the same zestiness. Either way though, adding a little fresh squeezed juice over the top of your avocado toast is a great finishing touch.
This is optional, and I don’t usually use any, but a dash of hot sauce is another great ingredient if you like it spicy. Just grab whatever you have in the fridge, add a few drops and you’ll be good to go. Same of my favorites to have on hand are Cholula Original Hot Sauce, Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Wings Sauce, and Tapatio Salsa Picante Hot Sauce.
And that’s it! By just adding a few extra ingredients, you can take your avocado and toast from good to amazing and maybe you’ll be at obsession level in no time, like me.
Add in a hard boiled egg and some fruit and you’ve got a nice, filling breakfast that is quick and easy to throw together. My one year old loves it and often tries to steal mine if I don’t eat fast enough!
If you want to turn your toast itself into a complete meal, try adding a fried egg, cheese, bacon, and/or tomatoes on top. Pretty much, whatever sounds good! If you have a great avocado base layer, anything you add on top is just like icing on the cake! Or in this case, icing on the avocado toast, although I don’t recommend that in a literal sense!
As I mentioned earier, I am a little obsessed with avocado toast. So when an add popped up on my facebook feed, I was laughing about how avocado toast is now following me! This add cracks me up! Because I too, wouldn’t think of paying for avocado toast since it is so easy to make at home! But thank you Wealthsimple for the laugh. Well played news feed ads, well played.
Have you tried Avocado Toast before? If not, don’t wait any longer, you need it in your life! Trust me on this one. Is anyone else as avocado obsessed as me? What’s your favorite way to eat an avocado?
